TikTok owners want Microsoft to take over US business in a bid to escape looming ban - report

4 days ago   |   By RT

Chinese firm ByteDance, which owns the popular short-video app, has reportedly offered to completely forgo a stake in the US business of TikTok hours before US President Donald Trump was meant to ban the service.
ByteDance initially planned to keep a minority stake in its overseas operations, but the initial proposal met opposition in the White House. As the Trump administration increased pressure, the company, unwilling to lose the US market with millions of users, came up with a new deal on Saturday, Reuters reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

TikTok says it's “not planning on going anywhere” in response to pending U.S. ban

4 days ago   |   By Tech Crunch

TikTok's U.S. General Manager Vanessa Pappas has posted a video message to the platform that appears to be a response to reports from Friday that President Trump is working on an effective “ban” of the app in the U.S., a plan he shared with reporters from the White House pool on board Air Force One. Whether or not he's even able to do this remains an open question, but in the meantime TikTok seems keen to reassure U.S. users it doesn't intend to change its operational plans in response to this vague, but potentially existential threat.
TikTok just posted this: “We're not planning on going...

ByteDance and Microsoft offer deal to allow TikTok to remain in the U.S., per report

4 days ago   |   By Tech Crunch

China's ByteDance has agreed to divest its TikTok operations in the US, according to a report in Reuters. Under the deal, Microsoft would take over stewardship of the data of U.S.-based users. The deal allows another company besides Microsoft to operate TikTok in the United States. This would allow the service to continue to operate in the United States, sidestepping the alleged executive order threatened by President Trump.
Allegedly, ByteDance had previously sought a deal that would allow the company to retain a minority stake in the company. That plan was apparently recently abandoned...
