WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed a Chinese official's assertion that his administration has agreed to roll back some the higher tariffs it's imposed on Chinese goods. The Chinese official had said Thursday that the two sides had agreed to a phased cancellation of their tariff hikes as part of an emerging agreement.
Trump's pushback suggested that negotiations haven't progressed as far as hoped as the world's two biggest economies struggle to negotiate an end to their trade war, which has hurt both economies.

Trade doubts emerge after White House adviser says 'there is no agreement' to roll back China tariffs

The Trump administration sent conflicting messages on trade negotiations with China at the end of the week.
White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said Friday she thought some tariffs could be lifted as part of an agreement to defuse trade tensions, which Trump announced last month.
But White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said late Thursday that while planned escalations could be cancelled as part of an agreement, there were no current stipulations that lifted previous tariffs.
